Under the Marula Tree is our first project under the ROOT umbrella, is a unique audiovisual journey through Africa. 16 original instrumental musical tracks inspired by some of the most loved animals of the African bush are complemented by a beautiful photographic portfolio highlighting and celebrating their beauty and conservation status.

We all have things we feel strongly about, and sometimes that’s as far as it goes and sometimes that passion plants a seed which we are able to share, grow and express. ROOT started as an idea between 4 friends, living in the heart of Zululand, and all passionate about Africa, wildlife and conservation. Increasingly worried about the challenges to nature, not only in our corner of paradise, but also world wide, we wanted a way we could communicate, inspire and educate in support of conservation, wildlife and wild places. The Musical Maestros The music in Under the Marula Tree was composed, played, mixed and recorded by Eugene (The Bone Collector) Viljoen and Corrie (The Car Guard) Pretorius. Eugene  Eugene’s vision and passion has driven and shaped the ROOT project to its current form. He does everything to 110 %, whether it is his music or his work as an Orthopaedic surgeon. His attention to detail is legendary and he inspires with his energy and his incredible musical talent. He has been playing and composing music for over 20 years, both solo and in a variety of groups and bands; ...

TRACK 1 : AFRICAN SUNRISE The first track on the "Under the Marula Tree" album, “African Sunrise”, is the unmistakable music of the African bush as it rises to the new day, the call of the Gorgeous Bush-Shrike, harmonizing with the cooing of the Emerald Spotted Wood Dove.  This introduces the Taylor guitar arpeggio notes which carry you into a crescendo of strings evoking the first rays of the sun bathing the landscape.
